The IFT machine, also known as interferential therapy, is a crucial component of the physiotherapy recovery process. It is one of several electrotherapy treatment modalities that use electric current to achieve the desired outcome. Other electrotherapy techniques include infrared lamp therapy, shortwave diathermy, and ultrasonic therapy. When treating a patient, the therapist frequently uses TENS, which uses continuously applied low-frequency alternating current or direct current. However, TENS, or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, does not penetrate deeper tissues and instead works best to stimulate nerves at the skin's surface. This is due to the high level of resistance that direct current and low-frequency alternating current encounter in the skin's outer layer. In order for sufficient current to pass deeply, a large cutaneous current must flow, which makes treating deeper structures painful. A medium- or high-frequency alternating current encounters little resistance and easily penetrates the tissue. High- and medium-frequency alternating currents, however, oscillate too quickly to directly stimulate the tissue.
